TJ®-Shear Panels Help Minimize Home Damage

Every year, news stories tell of the destruction of homes and loss of life from earthquakes and hurricanes. Other homes are severely damaged by high winds - even far away from coastal areas. The quality of structural framing materials plays a major role in how well homes stand up to such natural disasters. Builders, designers and specifiers looking for consistent and predictable performance under lateral loads, and to meet code requirements, are increasingly turning to prefabricated shear wall panels for their design needs. Many are choosing the iLevel™ Trus Joist® TJ®-Shear Panel. (www.iLevel.com)

In addition to resisting lateral loads from earthquakes and hurricanes, the TJ-Shear Panel offers specifiers and designers design flexibility for walls with many windows and portals - a benefit for regions where seismic activity and high winds may not be a concern.

Traditionally, shear walls were built on site, with a high degree of variability and unpredictable performance. They were time consuming to build and often resulted in wasted materials. The TJ-Shear Panel provides consistent and predictable panel performance under lateral loads. With their one-piece, modular construction, one person can easily install the panels. In addition, because they are made from iLevel™ Trus Joist® TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL), TJ-Shear Panels are exceptionally strong and resist bowing, shrinking and twisting.

TJ-Shear Panels mount to the foundation slab or stemwall with only two nuts and two washers, making installation quick and easy. Lag screw holes for connection to the framing top plate are pre-drilled at an angle for easy access. The TJ-Shear Panel is also pre-drilled for electrical wires helping builders save time and eliminating guesswork.

The superior structural performance and predictability of TJ-Shear Panels are a result of symmetrical panel design, concentric hold-downs and double-shear nail connections. TJ-Shear Panels provide the added strength necessary for framing areas of the home susceptible to high lateral loads. Such areas include large openings for garage doors, and walls with numerous window and door openings.

To help meet growing demand for TJ-Shear Panels, especially in the California and Western U.S. markets, iLevel is constructing a new manufacturing facility in Chino, California. The facility is scheduled to start limited production of the panels in December 2006 and reach planned capacity during first quarter 2007. The new facility demonstrates iLevel's commitment and longevity in the braced wall market. Its location will also allow better access for customers to tour the facility and learn more about the design and use of TJ-Shear Panels.

TJ-Shear Panels come in a variety of widths and heights and are one part of a complete and integrated package of framing materials - from foundation to rooftop. Other trusted products and brands from iLevel include Trus Joist Parallam® parallel strand lumber (PSL), Trus Joist TimberStrand laminated strand lumber (LSL), TJI® joists, Structurwood Edge® and Structurwood Edge Gold® floor panels, and Weyerhaeuser Premium Joists™. Commercial buildings are often built under very tight budgets, with exact load specifications and the need for open floor plans. To meet the unique demands of commercial buildings, architects, designers and builders often select iLevel™ Trus Joist® Open-Web™ trusses for strong, reliable and economical roof structural framing. (www.iLevel.com)

iLevel Open-Web trusses are lightweight, stable and easy to install – making them a natural choice for stores, offices, warehouses and other commercial applications.

For buildings with exceptionally long spans – more than 100 feet – Open-Web trusses are the ideal solution. Their high strength-to-weight performance allows builders to span large distances with fewer supporting structures – providing the critical clear floor space required in many commercial buildings. Open-Web trusses work equally well in other building applications where design flexibility and economy are needed.

Open-Web trusses are available in numerous configurations, allowing architectural freedom and a range of aesthetic choices. Architects and designers can choose configurations such as parallel chord, tapered, pitched, scissor, barrel, and parabolic, among others. iLevel custom manufactures each truss to the specifications of the individual job and provides designers and builders with a range of technical support services.

Combining steel webs with Trus Joist TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL) top chords, the T-Series Open-Web trusses are pound-for-pound among the strongest structural members available. In addition, the strength and consistency of the TimberStrand LSL top chords makes them ideal for nailing – resisting splitting even under close on-center nailing, or with multiple rows of nails.

Open-Web trusses are just one part of a complete and integrated package of commercial framing materials – from foundation to rooftop – which include other trusted products and brands such as Trus Joist TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL), Trus Joist Parallam® parallel strand lumber (PSL) and Trus Joist TJI® joists. Covering Over Their Best Work

Quality Floors are the Hallmark of Quality Builders

“Curb appeal” is the popular judgment of a home’s quality. But homeowners often judge quality by things they cannot see – such as the floor structure. Knowing this, builders are increasingly aware of “floor appeal” – one that feels solid and secure, at a good value.

Quality floors require joists, rim board and panels that are consistent and engineered to work together. Many builders have found the solution with the iLevelTM Trus Joist FrameWorks® Floor System. iLevel helps builders construct floors that are easy to install, with components that offer consistent and reliable performance – features that can reduce time, labor and callbacks. (www.iLevel.com)

While homeowners may never see the iLevel logo on their home’s flooring structure, they can feel confident in the quality of their home knowing that it is built with industry-leading brands. When they walk across their new home’s floor, the quality will be evident in every step – enhancing the reputation of the builder who installed it.

The FrameWorks Floor System starts with the iLevelTM Trus Joist Silent Floor® Joist, also known as the TJI® joist. The dimensional stability of TJI joists helps them resist warping, twisting and shrinking - factors that can lead to squeaky or bouncy floors. The joists are lightweight and come in long lengths, which can help save on labor because they are faster and easier to install than traditional framing. In addition, designers can use the TJ-ProTM Rating System to balance floor performance and cost by selecting the right combination of materials to account for homeowners’ perceptions of “feel” without overbuilding.

Sized to work with TJI joists is iLevelTM Trus Joist TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL) rim board – engineered to be consistently straight and true, and dimensionally stable. These properties provide superior performance in transferring vertical and lateral loads to the home’s foundation, as well as an excellent attachment point for decks.

Topping off the FrameWorks Floor System is the iLevelTM Trus Joist TJ-Performance Plus® panel. The panels are stiffer and hold fasteners better than many other panels, providing a solid base for hardwood floors or ceramic tile – which can result in fewer call-backs for builders, and happier homeowners. In addition, TJ-Performance Plus panels have a clear edge seal that offers superior moisture resistance, a no sand guarantee, and unique fastening template that can make installation faster and more accurate.

iLevel structural floor products are one part of a complete and integrated package of framing materials – from foundation to rooftop – which include trusted products and brands such as Trus Joist Parallam® parallel strand lumber (PSL), Trus Joist TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL), Structurwood® panels and Weyerhaeuser Premium Joists™.
